There is not much research in this area with cats. The use of probiotics can be very useful for helping with long term digestive disorders-e.g. inflammatory bowel disease, food related diarrhoea, stress colitis (diarrhoea). Probiotics are "good bacteria" which are necessary for the gut to work effectively. Sometimes the balance between good and bad bacteria in the gut is uneven, and needs to be rebalanced.
There has been some links that by improving gut health, you can also improve brain health. I think probiotics are useful for some behavioural problems or anxiety related problems, if the cat is also showing signs of digestive problems. If the cat appears to have normal appetite and stools etc, then they may be of much less benefit!
