I used desensitization a lot with puppies afraid of coming to the grooming salon or veterinary clinic. With dogs that were perhaps afraid of the hair clippers, I recommended owners show their dog an electric toothbrush at home to get used to the buzzing sound. Or with a dog afraid of having its feet touched, make sure to set time aside to touch their feet when they aren't stressed to begin with, maybe while laying on the couch next to you. With dogs who have anxiety with even coming into the vet clinic, bring them to the clinic for quick five minute trips to just walk in, get a treat and greet the front office staff and then leave. The idea is that the more a dog can be exposed to something it may be afraid of in a non-threatening way, the more comfortable it will become. It is important to do this with puppies so that they learn from the beginning that there is nothing to fear from trips to the groomer or vet, or whatever it is they may be afraid of.
