One of the best ways to start is for them to meet in neutral territory. Depending on the living situation, this may not be possible, but that is a very good start. Don't force it, let them see/smell each other but only for a short time, so they are still curious, then separate them. Do this over a few days, and hopefully the new family member will be accepted sooner rather than later.
