Horses work off of trust and fear. If they are afraid of something, they balk at it. If they trust, they will work around it. Using positive reinforcement allows the horse to use his trust in you to learn that he doesn't need to be afraid. Stay confident and encourage your horse to go near whatever he is afraid of, and reward him for trusting you. Horses are relationship animals, and this will help them get over balking.
