Dogs sleep more than people, sometimes even 15-18 hours a day, but, they are used to taking short naps, or sleeping while you are at work. If we are talking about small puppies, some of them likes being awake at night, just like human babies, and sleeping by day.
Mostly, it is owners wish to give sleep aid supplement formulas, so that they could have a good night sleep. In my opinion, it is cruel, and it is just as 'drugging' a child just because you don't have nerves.
Sleep aid help is indicated in some cases, like changing homes, before dog can adjust, or when you bring your puppy home for the first time, and he is scared because he misses his mommy.
In some cases, if your dog can't sleep as before, it is a possible symptom of some underlying problem, and veterinary opinion is a must.
