If I have a horse who doesn't like to have his feet cleaned or trimmed, working with them on a consistent basis is the best way to change this behavior. I'm always gentle, but safe when I work with a horse's feet. Don't stand where you can get kicked or stepped on. If they really don't like to hold their hind feet up, a soft cotton rope can be looped around the foot used from a safer distance to hold the foot up. Eventually, they will see that you don't mean to harm them and will usually respond. Negative reinforcement only makes matters worse, in my opinion.
