CCD can stem from a number of reasons, and most often it can start as early as puppy stage. Most dogs cope much better with stress if they're shown how to correctly deal with the situation. Dogs that lick themselves obsessively, or nibble their flanks, can easily be shown a better way to deal with their feelings. Rather have them chew on their chew toys, of give them kongs stuffed with peanut butter. Replace the bad behavior with an acceptable behavior, and soon they'll look for the replacement stimuli instead of displaying negative behavior.
