I ran many of my barrel horses in snaffle bits because they encourage flexion and help the horse stay "soft" in the mouth, i.e. not pulling on the rider. There are a number of different options for shank length, mouth piece style, location of the breaks in the mouth piece and gag or regular styles. I usually chose a medium to long shank, single break large twisted wire mouth piece because it allowed me to have soft hands while providing extra rate if it was needed.
