Crate training is important for the sake of your sanity! I began crate training my dog as a puppy and she screamed and screamed, but unfortunately if she was left out of her crate unattended, for even a little bit of time, you could be sure the mattress, or the couch, or really anything she could find would be ruined. Luckily after just a couple years she grew out of the dreaded chewing phase and I am now able to trust her to be out of her cage, unattended, for long periods of time. Crate training is particularly useful if you have more than one pet in your home, to prevent any fights, etc. Even though it's difficult to get your dog used to the crate it's very important that you do! In ideal situations the crate will be your dogs 'safe zone' as a den is to a wolf.
