Socializing your puppy is critical for healthy development. There are different types of socialization - socializing with other puppies, socializing with older dogs, socializing with humans, and other animals. Essentially, if you want your dog as an adult to be comfortable in social situations, you should give him a chance to learn social skills as a puppy that involve those situations.
A puppy socialization class will help your puppy learn bite control. When his puppy friends stop playing with him because he's too nippy, he learns to be more gentle with his mouth.
It's important to note that socialization is not the same as taking your puppy to obedience classes. A good socialization experience will include free play and someone to monitor the situation to make sure no one gets hurt. If your puppy is around other animals or people and is having fun, that is socialization. If your puppy is being punished or injured during these times, that is not a good socialization moment.
Ideally, your puppy will have opportunities to socialize off leash in a variety of situations.
