This is an important training method I have used to reduce barking, in conjunction with things like appropriate exercise and enrichment.
Counter conditioning for barking can be used to redirect your dog from, for example, barking at a ringing doorbell to instead going to lie on a mat. It is a great tool for modifying problem behaviors like barking.
With sufficient time and positive reinforcement, counter conditioning can even turn a somewhat stressful trigger into a happy opportunity for your dog.
The only downside is that it can be tricky to create a training plan and implement. It's a good idea to enlist the help of a trainer who has experience with the technique!
