While lunging is super useful, it can easily become a crutch. Letting your horse go crazy before a workout isn't a great way to warm their muscles up slowly. Additionally, make sure that you're using a long enough lunge line: it should be at least 30' in diameter. Running around in circles that are too small can put stress on your horse's joints. Additionally, it can be tricky to build proper muscle tone when lunging unless you're really thinking about your techniques. Overall, even though lunging can be a great substitute workout for when you can't ride, you should be mindful of how often you use it.
