My dog was scared of men, hands down, the worst fears. He would shake, get snappy, growl and bark at any man or anyone wearing a hat. I first let him acclimate to my dad and boyfriend (now husband) as they would be familiar to him in his every day life. After he settled down and accepted them, I moved on to bringing him to the pet store and parks nearby making a point to ask the men to speak kindly around him. Eventually his fears switched from unable to function to absolute joy. He now loves everyone and is the first to greet you at the door or in the store. I found that desensitation, although it takes a while, is the most effective method for dogs to get over deep-seated fears. It's amazing to see them enjoy life to their fullest again.
