Positive reinforcement when giving medications and wormers will make treatments for your horse easier for you and your horse in the long run. To give medicine orally by syringe, you can first introduce the syringe treatment to your horse with no medicine, but rather a spare syringe filled with applesauce. If your horse needs to be given pills, you can crush the pills with a mortar and pestle, and then mix the medication with plain water in the syringe. If your horse needs more flavor to hide the medication, mix the crushed pills with applesauce or crushed peppermints.
If your horse is just not happy about the syringe, you can mix medicine in a handful or two of grain in the horse’s food tub. Other goodies you can add to the grain and medicine mix to entice your horse include chopped carrots, peppermints, honey, or chopped apples.
