When training and riding, we are most expecting horses learn from the RELEASE of pressure. This is a form of negative reinforcement. When you apply pressure on the reins, or your leg, or on the leadrope, they move away from the pressure. When we then release the pressure, they know they found the right answer. If we release before getting a response, or do not release the pressure after they did the right thing, you're doing a great job of training the horse to ignore you!
Negative reinforcement training is an essential tool in working with horses and can be enhanced by positive reinforcement methods.
