Calming the nervous horse

There are many strategies that can be used to help ease the nerves of horses, but when I have a particularly nervous horse, I like to help them out from the start to relax by using a calming supplement like lavender. It's not something I necessarily use every time, but when introducing a particularly nervous horse to something new, or to help out a horse that's been unusually uneasy, lavender is an excellent option. It's natural and horses are very sensitive to essential oils. Always let them smell it first, and if they seem to like it then I'll rub a couple drops on their chest. If a horse turns away from any essential oil - do NOT use it on them. The oils they're attracted to are the ones they need!
