Horses can learn that if they intimidate a rider by bucking, they will not have to go forward. Bucking is a backward motion, and when you are riding, you should always be moving your horse forward. If you horse is trying to avoid moving forward by bucking, use your stick and your leg to coax him forward. If you push him forward, he will not be able to buck. The stick (or crop) is a good reinforcement that you will not be intimidated by his behavior.
