Gel cushioning sounds like it would work well, but I found that it didn't provide as much protection for my horse than I had expected. It quickly wore out in the front within a year of moderate riding. I later learned that scientific studies have shown that with the weight of the rider, these pads often do not distribute weight and pressure evenly, still allowing for possible pinching or added pressure in areas like the withers.
If the pad is made with a combination of wool and gel, this is likely a better pad - but more because of the wool rather than the gel.
