One of the physical therapy exercises which is recommended for dogs with IVDD after the surgery, is swimming, especially in dogs who can't yet walk and get exercises this way. Swimming can be started as soon as the surgical wound heals, and it's best done with the aid of a vest.
You certainly can't just toss your dog into water and let it swim since it's still not recovered and there is a chance of drowning. Swim vests are very good aid in these cases, they allow your dog to get exercise and give you a bit of freedom so you don't have to hold your dog the entire time, though you should be around and keeping close eye in case something goes wrong.
Before starting any physical activity always consult with your vet about the right time to start, intensity and regiment of the activity as well as further steps in the course of treatment and recovery.
