Scientific research in humans shows benefits in reduction of cholesterol levels and stabilization of cholesterol metabolism, some benefit in heart disease, mostly in overweight individuals. These are not very common problems in dogs, though they're not entirely absent.
There is not enough research to justify it's use in dogs. Another thing human research shows is that supplementation is usually not necessary if you setup a healthy diet, you would get enough through food, it's reasonable to assume this applies to dogs too.
On the other hand they don't seem to do any harm, but you can always overdo even the most healthy substance so if you're using these take care not to give too much.
