Advanced imaging technique like CT and MRI have very high sensitivity (100%) and specificity (90%) in differentiating between benign or malign focal masses of the liver. MRI especially correctly identifies hepatocellular carcinoma.
These imagining techniques are quite useful for diagnosing and staging various liver disease, and especially hepatocellural carcinoma. Although MRI provides better soft tissue contrast and is probably superior in diagnosing small lesions, CT scan will be just as reliable in most cases.
Only downside of these imaging techniques is that they require general anesthesia.
