Merrick Limited Ingredient is a very good dog food, and due to the fact that it uses protein sources which aren't commonly used in dog diets it can be useful as a novel protein elimination diet, or a diet for allergic dogs. You just have to make sure your dog hasn't eaten the meat or plant protein on which these products are based, for at least two months before the first symptoms appeared, ideally never.
Since it's grain free, it also eliminates gluten, another common dietary allergen, though not as common in dogs as it is in humans.
Dry foods from this line are based on chicken, duck, turkey, lamb and salmon, chicken and lamb probably aren't a good choice, unless you already know your dog isn't allergic to them, as they're commonly found in other diets, especially chicken.
