Hypofunctional adrenal glands may be smaller than normal glands (adrenal width of 3 mm or less), and sometimes the adrenal glands cannot be identified on ultrasound study. The adrenal glands will only be seen if high frequency transducers are available to produce optimal image quality. Besides, ultrasonography is a useful test for assessing the adrenal glands in dogs on the basis of both the advanced ultrasound machines available and accumulated experience.
