Dexamethasone is a strong synthetic glucocorticosteroid, which contains hormones of the adrenal cortex and their synthetic analogues. Its effect is several times stronger than that of prednisolone. Therefore, dexamethasone is more often used in emergency cases as an anti-allergic and anti-shock drug for removing acute allergy symptoms. In addition, it has a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous effect.
Dexamethasone is an indispensable agent for alleviating severe complications with allergies: such as anaphylactic shock, collapse, Quincke's edema, severe asthmatic attack; but this drug may cause undesirable side effects with prolonged use or with individual intolerance.
