Theophylline is a bronchodilator, meaning that it opens/dilates the small airways (bronchioles) in the lungs.
1. This allows better flow of air and therefore better oxygen delivery.
2. It relaxes the smooth muscles in the windpipe and bronchioles and allows better breathing.
3. It also makes the tiny hairs in the respiratory tract called cilia beat faster, which helps to remove any mucus or dirt from the wind pipe into the throat.
An overdose of the medication can cause: nausea, restlessness, vomiting, abnormal heart beats and collapse.
