Vomiting/diarrhea which are the most common symptoms of gastroduodenal ulcers are also the most common symptoms in dogs overall, thus good history and good physical are necessary to determine which next step is the most appropriate.
Vomiting and diarrhea can be signs of something as benign as eating junk, as well as something life-threatening like kidney disease, obstructed intestines, pancreatitis, liver disease etc.
Physical examination can give us enough details to presume the disease in question and require only a few additional diagnostic procedures to confirm it, this of course highly dependent on the expertise of the veterinarian doing the exam, but that's what separates good vets from bad ones, everyone can diagnose a disease with enough diagnostic procedures, good vets need only a few, after good physical and good history taking.
