Dog chews mostly have limited benefits because these do not always reach the gum line of the dental surface so some tartar and plaques can still buildup there. These may be used as an occasional dental care for certain days that we can't brush our dog's teeth, but these can't be considered as a fool proof replacement of an actual dental prophylaxis for dogs.
