I have not trimmed my cat's claws in well over a year and might never trim them. If I were to see one of my cats with a claw that had either gotten hurt or was simply catching everything because of a hang-nail I would trim that claw so that it wouldn't bother them any more, but that is the most I recommend. For an inside cat, sure you might want to trim them on a regular basis, but my cats spend most of their time outdoors. There have been raccoons, opossums, and other animals in my neighborhood, not to mention a large male cat that belongs to someone else that loves to pick fights with my cats in my own yard. If my cats did not have their claws they would not be able to defend themselves. Anyone whose cat goes outside should take this into consideration before they completely trim their cat's nails.
