Anal Sac Disease can result in inflammation, infection and pain in the area surrounding the dog’s anus. The medication used to treat it depends on the severity of the condition. For minor infections wherein most of the anal sac fluid has been released, antibiotic or corticosteroid or anesthetic ointments can be applied. If there are small open wounds in the areas of the anal sac glands, this may also aid in healing. However, if the dog is prone to scooting or licking the area, ointments are quickly rendered ineffective. They are also not recommended if the infection is serious. The veterinarian will determine whether an ointment is either enough or needs to be supplemented with oral medication.
