Alfalfa hay is a high protein hay which can be a wonderful addition to the equine diet. The hay is higher in energy, which makes it beneficial for horses who have high energy requirements. Lactating mares, horses in heavy work or those who suffer from gastric ulcers can often benefit from high-quality alfalfa hay.
A word of caution: horses with metabolic issues or have a history of laminitis (founder) should not be given alfalfa hay without consulting a veterinarian first. The hay is considerably richer than grass hay blends and may cause more harm than good in such cases.
