Necessity depends on severity

Dogs who suffer from conjunctivitis often paw at their eyes, since this is a very irritating, itchy condition. Because pawing can seriously damage an eye, it's important that we protect our pets from themselves with an E-collar.
E-collar is recommended in any case of eye disease during the course of treatment, and it's particularly important in cases which are treated surgically.
E-collar should be worn for the entire length of the treatment.

E-collars tend to be uncomfortable, at least for a first few days, and dogs don't really like them, but you have to have "a heart of stone" and not fall for your dogs whimper and sad look, cause they can mess up their eyes in a matter of minutes if the itch is severe.

In mild cases of conjunctivitis, an e-collar might not be necessary, but it's better to have it than to risk your pet damaging their eye seriously.
