If the rabbit is very ill and is not drinking or eating fluid therapy is essential to treat dehydration.
IV fluid therapy in the lateral saphenous vein or cephalic vein can be cumbersome and requires slow flows. If the veins are very small or fragile, the vet can choose the intraosseous route, equally effective. Recommended sites to place the IO catheter are the anterior aspect of the femur and the upper, proximal tibia. The area should be prepared aseptically and local anesthesia should be used.
