Necessary, but only after stabilization
Chest ray is necessary part of diagnostic process in cases of ARDS, since this condition can be caused by virtually any lung disease, trauma and smoke inhalation, on top of that, pulmonary edema caused by heart disease can have the same presentation.
Despite the fact that x-rays are necessary, they should never be performed prior to stabilization, since positions needed for taking of x-rays can lead to asphyxiation and death.
