Urethral obstruction is the most common problem that leads to acute renal failure.
I like to combine X-ray with ultrasound when possible, but if not, X- ray can show us problem in the urinary tract, which is most possible some kind of stones.
With X-ray we can determine shape, size and position of stones, and of other normal structures in the body, such as kidney, urethra, bladder and prostate (in males).
After finding stones, best course would be proper blood work and urinalysis.
