Apoquel (oclacitinib) is a very effective allergy medication that helps control itching and skin inflammation. In the past steroid medications were the most commonly used drugs for allergies, but these have a lot of side effects, especially if given long term. They have effects all over the body in addition to he skin. Apoquel more specifically targets the skin so is less likely to cause long term systemic side effects.

Apoquel is usually given twice daily for 1-2 weeks and then is giving once daily. Some dogs need it throughout the year and others need it just while their skin is flaring up. Some dogs may have vomiting or diarrhea. There is also evidence that if a dog has cancer, apoquel may cause it to progress more quickly. Therefore, I usually choose other medications for dogs who have skin tumors or other types of cancers.
