Amoxicillin/clavulanate or Cephalexine two empirical choices in case of metritis, as they should be effective against causal bacteria and they're safe for the nursing pups.
Penicillin is only used if bacterial sensitivity testing shows it's the best choice, which is highly unlikely given that it's a very old antibiotic, it's also available only in injectable form which isn't very practical given the fact that most dogs who suffer from metritis are treated as outpatients.
