Metritis shouldn't be confused with pyometra, though both are technically infection of the uterine lining, pathogenesis of the condition is different as is the severity. Pyometra occurs due to combination of infection and hormonal disbalance in the lack of pregnancy, while metritis is an infection of the uterine lining which occurs few days postpartum (after giving birth). Pyometra is a critical condition which requires immidiate and ideally surgical treatment, while metritis is treated surgically (OVH) only in cases which don't respond to conservative treatment (antibiotics+prostaglandines) or when peritonitis develops.
