We got our guinea pig from somebody who could no longer look after him. He had always lived alone, so we decided the children would be enough company for him, rather than running the risk of him not getting on with a second new guinea pig. He was a really sweet little guy, very friendly with the children and just the right mix of cuddly and adventurous. He was relatively easy to keep. At first we had him in an indoor cage but he was very smelly so after a while we moved him outside to a hutch, where he was very happy. He was easy and cheap to feed and he liked to be let out to run around in the run in the garden. He was very funny, because if it started to rain I would go out to bring him back to his hutch and he would leap into my arms and snuggle into my elbow to hide from the rain. I think guinea pigs make great pets for children and they are a good option if you want a cheaper pet that doesn't require much work. It's quite easy to clean them out and unless you get a long-haired variety they don't require any grooming. I did get his nails clipped by the vet as they grew quite long. You can do this at home if you feel comfortable doing it yourself. Overall, I think guinea pigs are great. They make cute chattering noises which are very funny too!
