Rhoda The Rambunctious Rodent Pig

Some time after the new year (98) my sister and I each purchased a Teddy Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus) from the pet store. Though the owner originally sold us a rabbit cage with holes too large for our pigs feet and resulted in a broken leg and eventually an amputation of Rhoda's sister, Rosie's, leg. Overall our pigs were very happy, well fed and entertaining.

Rhoda was quite vocal, bucked and bounced across the room whenever we let her out of her (upgraded) cage. She consumed enormous quantities of alfalfa and wheat grass and small vegetable pellets and though she was adorable doing so, her cage did require very regular cleaning. The urine odor as it saturated the sawdust bedding was potent and without thoroughly disinfecting it, they were at risk of getting sores on their 7 tiny feet.

We were lucky to have guinea pigs that enjoyed attention and being handled, never had any diseases and gave our cats something to eye suspiciously for several years.
