I received my guinea pig as a present, and it turned out that it wasn't the right pet for me. My mother wanted it, I gave it to her and it turned out great for her. When it comes to pets I strongly recommend that you should be the one that decide what to have; you shouldn't think that you will hurt the feelings of any friend that surprises you with a pet if you see that it doesn't work for you and want to find it another owner. It is the best way for you and also the pet. I find guinea pigs hard to train and a bit hard to clean after.
I'm used to have a pet always around me, always reachabe for hugs:). Or at least to keep it free so that he could come to me when i call, like a parrot. If you wanna spend time with a guinea pig outside his place, you will see that you won't find so agreeable the fact that you can't really litter train it. Anyway my mother loves her, turned out it's a girl :), she takes very good care of her, this is why Pansy-that's how she named her-, was never sick and she's doing great even if she's 6 years old. Pansy's favourite food is green grass, my mother finds it for her even in the coldest winters:). Other favourite dishes: green salad and cucumbers.
