Giggles, the first pet I had that was truly mine. I got him when I was eight and simply adored him. He was very docile and energetic, which was an odd combination yet the only way I can think to describe hamsters.

They're nocturnal animals so they're not often active during the day unless prodded awake by an over eager child. I used to wait until later in the afternoon and then I'd put him his little ball and watch him roam about the house.

Hamsters don't need an extremely big cage but hey so require several things in it. Soft bedding, a house, a wheel, and maybe some tunnels. In addition to their food bowl and water bottle that is.

I've always been quite the heavy sleeper so his night time running sprees on his wheel never bothered me, but you may want to keep that in mind if your child is more of a sensitive sleeper.

All around they're great pets and even now years later I still think of my hamsters fondly.
