It seems that everyone thinks that hamsters are great children's pets, but I tend to disagree. Hamsters aren't overly thrilled about being handled, and that is what most children want in a pet. Hamster cages require frequent cleaning as hamsters stash their food. Hamsters are also nocturnal and tend to make a lot of noise at night.
I feel that hamsters are better suited to older children. Be prepared to take of the responsibility should your child not do so. Hamsters can and do chew through plastic, so take this into consideration when choosing a cage. Make sure your child is aware that hamsters look really cute and cuddly, but they aren't really all that keen on cuddling.
