Muppet and Elmo!

I had two separate chinchillas when I was younger named Muppet and Elmo respectively, and they're a great fun, if slightly quirky pet. You don't seem to come across chinchillas very often in people's houses (in the UK anyway), and this is probably due to the fact they are a sizeable critter.
If you have a pet the size of a guinea pig or rabbit you tend to have a large wooden hutch, and a run, and garden space. However chinchillas suffer badly as a species in hot weather, so keep them away from radiators and from windows during summer. They also need a very large indoor cage, at least 6 x 6' or more.
They are very active and fun to watch running around the house but will gnaw everything, I lost countless book spines. They will also go for wooden bed/chair legs etc., so anything you actually care about, put away or cover up.
