Beano was a surprise addition. I bought a male chinchilla who very unexpectedly gave birth to Beano! She has been with me since 2001 and was 15 years old this year(2016) her colouring is a white mosaic and she resembles a fluffy pom-pom.
Beano lives in a big cage, which is approximately 6 feet high by 4 feet square. The bigger accommodation you can offer a chinchilla the better as they love to jump, make sure you provide plenty of wooden shelves at varying levels for your furry friend to hop about on.
A chinchilla's teeth grow continuously throughout the animal's life so providing plenty of chinchilla friendly wooden toys to gnaw on is essential.
They're nocturnal animals so my advice would be not to hang toys with bells on the end if you wish to sleep well!
Chinchillas are not generally cuddle monsters and would rather come to you when they're ready. Daily dust baths are a must to keep their gorgeous fur in excellent condition, you can purchase special chinchilla dust.
They eat chinchilla pellets and like Charlie Chinchilla but this does cause them to become selective eaters, picking out their favourite bits and leaving the rest so pellets are best.
Personally in my opinion I don't rate chinchillas as terrific pets for children, as they're not too keen on being handled and can give you a nasty nip just to remind you of this fact.
They can also live for twenty years so you must be committed to them.
Chinchillas can be susceptible to dental and digestive problems so also take into consideration that you'll probably require a chinchilla friendly vet nearby.
