Chinchillas are native to the South American Andes mountains, living in colonies called herds at high elevations. Their velvet like fur has led to over hunting and low populations in the wild. In captivity, chinchillas are popular pet. However, they do require a great deal of care by an experienced owner.
Chinchillas require special attention to their dental care as their teeth continually grow over the duration of their life span. Dust baths are required for their special velvet like fur, and temperatures carefully monitored.
