I absolutely loved my pet rat, Fidget. I got her when I was 9 years old and enjoyed her for about 2 years before she died from a brain tumor.
I kept her in a bird cage, because she loved to climb. I trained her to come and to not pee or poop on me. I eventually became comfortable having her walk freely around the house and she spent lots of time sitting on my shoulder or inside my sleeves of the clothes I wore. She was very social and loving.
At first my mom hated Fidget, but before long she began to love her too. Eventually Fidget started living in a stack of folded towels in my mom's bathroom instead of in her cage.
She ate most foods we gave her. Her favorite were M&Ms, which she would peel open, discarding the colored shell and only eating the chocolate. She also loved peanut butter.
Overall, as a small pet I think Fidget was great, she was quite intelligent, friendly, calm and able to be trained.
