Impa is the third rat I've owned. We ended up acquiring him when one of my children's friends asked us if we could watch him for a few weeks. A few weeks has ended up being a permanent thing :-). Rats are very sociable animals who love to snuggle and will almost always end up snuggling into your neck and hair. They love to play and are very interactive. They take treats and food right out of your hand, and are gentle when they do. And I have never once had a rat bite me or my kids (or anyone else who has handled them).
They will eat anything, so you have to be careful with what you feed them. We feed our rat kibble and various crackers, along with veggies. You can also give them cooked bones. This helps keep their teeth shortened.
The downside to having a rat is that their cage starts smelling really quickly, so you have to make sure to clean it once or twice a week. Another downside is that they WILL poop on you at some point when you are holding them, although it's really not as bad as it sounds. Seriously. :-)
