Pet store rats

I got a rat as kind of an impulse buy. A good friend of mine had a few rats and they were so friendly and fun. They were very smart and easy to handle. She had me take care of them a few times when she went out of town, so that made me want one of my own. However, the rat I bought at the pet store was no where near like hers. I read up on it, after the fact, and apparently you should really only get rats from reputable breeders. Rats from pet stores (typically) are not handled often enough as babies and they can be very mean. I bought a pretty mean rat. You could not handle him what so ever. I tried. I couldn't even get food into his cage. I did end up giving him over to a rescue, because I didn't know what to do. I tried to work with him for around a month. I have seen rats that are amazing pets! Just be sure to do your research and get one that has been handled. I'm sure the Petsmart rat I bought was not handled often or nicely and this caused his behavioral problems.
