I received two fancy mice from my local high school a few years ago. They had to be adopted or would be killed at the end of the year, so I took in two of them in May. Mice were, by far, my least favorite pet.
First, the habitat has to be cleaned very regularly. It wasn't a super easy cleanup either: you need to clean, disinfect, and put the habitat back pretty often to avoid smells and disease. The worst part, though, is that mice are nocturnal and very active at night. They would run on their wheel, skitter around, and make noise all night long. This is the only active and nocturnal animal I've ever owned and they convinced me to swear off nocturnal animals.
Mice would be great if you had a separate space to house them, like a spare room so you don't hear them at night. They're not the most high-maintenance pet out there, but they're not the best for beginners either.
