I bought Joey (female) from my local pet store where she was being sold as a feeder mouse. She was in a tank with lots of other mice, and had some scratches, which were from the other mice. It turned out that Joey was pregnant when I got her, and she gave birth to a litter of 7 mice, 6 females (Priscilla, Scampers, Lil' Squeaky, Munchkin, Tigger, and Noodle) and 1 male (Elvis).
The mice were very well-behaved. The only time I ever had any issues with Joey was when she had just given birth and didn't want us to go near her babies, which was understandable!
Fancy Mice like these are best suited for teens and adults. Older children should be okay with parental supervision. The mice are quite small and can squirm, and have to be picked up specifically so as not to injure their tails. With one hand at the base of the tail, and one hand under the mouse, it should be fairly easy to handle :)
The mice loved the exercise wheel in their crates. Once you buy the tank/cage, wheel, food/water bowls, and tank accessories, the cost to keep the mice is pretty low.
Mice are great, active, friendly pets for college students or others who live in apartments or other small spaces. Like college students, the mice are also usually awake and active at night! I didn't really train my mice for anything other than socialization. However, mice are very smart and further training definitely seems possible!
